Cybercrime – update from event

Our first event of the new year was a well attended breakfast hosted by Rhinefield House Hotel on the topic of cybercrime, presented by specialist police officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Cyberprotect team. Subjects covered included an overview of the many ways in which businesses can come under cyber attack, and what we should look out for in order to avoid becoming victims.

We also discussed the human element of so-called ‘social engineering’ attacks where employees are duped by emails or phone callers into thinking they need to change for example the bank account receiving payment for a supplier invoice. There was certainly plenty to think about, and several of the audience had stories of how they or their clients had been the subject of attacks.

There seemed to be plenty of interest in a follow up event to talk in more detail about how we can make our systems and our staff behaviour more secure.
