On 8th May members and non-members of the New Forest Business Partnership (NFBP) gathered at Chewton Glen Hotel to learn more about the Luxury sector. As most NFBP events do, this topic attracted a wide variety of local businesses which made for some brilliant networking before and after the presentation.
Professor Joanne Roberts, from Winchester Luxury Research Group (WLRG), presented on this interesting topic. Members of the WLRG, embedded in Winchester School of Art, provide a consultancy for those businesses who are working in this sector. Professor Joanne Roberts and Professor John Armitage have produced many publications to support their work as well as taking this knowledge into colleges to work with the students.
Professor Roberts began by asking the question what is ‘Luxury’ and explored this initial idea with those who attended. Interestingly, the speaker reported that the Luxury sector is growing faster than other sectors and how, with this growth, it moves across many different fields. With this growing sector it was noted that the nature of customers would be changing and that businesses need to be able to adapt to this change in order to survive. She highlighted the need for businesses to be able to tell a story with the product they are selling to entice the customer to buy into the whole experience of purchasing the item and not just the physical product they receive at the end.
With the New Forest being a great location for tourism Professor Roberts stressed how important tourism is for Luxury products/ experiences. The speaker finished her presentation by highlighting what the South of England has to offer to Luxury Producers, such as the coastline, the proximity to London and the heritage it holds. She encouraged those attendees to use these assets in marketing their Luxury product but at the same time to be mindful of the challenges that we also face in this area.
